They’re smooth and so much fun to draw with plus the colors are vibrant. They seem easy to hold (she first grabbed them one way and continues to hold them that way every time we draw) and to encourage a good tripod grip. They’ve been thrown around a bit already and haven’t broken or anything, so pretty sturdy, although she hasn’t tried putting too much pressure on them yet. "I bought these for my daughter when she was about 18 months old, now 2.5 years later she is still using them. These are pictures of the crayons today after 2.5 years of use. The box they came in is long gone, but the crayons are durable and long lasting. They are smooth to color with and blend and shade beautifully, really you could make a whole rainbow by just blending primary colors. But the other pigments are so beautiful too. The crayons are easy for a toddler to grip, and the shape is also great because you can use a flat side for wider swaths of shading, or use a corner for finer, darker lines. They have bite marks from when my daughter was younger, but have never broken. We also like to build mini towers out of them and knock them over at the dinner table. The company has been amazing to work with, feeling incomplete with a color missing from our set I contacted them and they allowed me to buy just the vermillion red crayon. I like to give these crayons as gifts to other families interested in Waldorf/Montessori or who just care about providing quality toys and materials for their kids to interact with. We have gone through countless boxes of other brands of crayons that seem to break when you look at them wrong, and the colors of the Filana crayons are so much more beautiful and vibrant. My kids were so excited to use them I wasn’t able to get a picture of them before they colored with them but I did get a couple action shots and a pic of the crayons all in their box after a few uses. The younger one immediately starts snapping them and the older one ends up breaking them too though it not intentional. “This is the first time I've given my daughter something to draw/color with and she really liked it. At almost 17 months she was able to press hard enough in different ways (e.g., coloring using the corner, coloring using it flat) to get a very bright picture. The selection of colors is great as well.
The block crayons were packaged nicely and seem strong; I know a lot of other crayons tend to break when pressed on. They are also a good size for her hands. These kept her entertained for at least 15 minutes two days in a row---which is amazing!
Most importantly, these Filana organic beeswax block crayons are safe. My daughter tends to put everything in her mouth and even though she has not done it with these crayons...yet...I have a level of comfort since they are organic/non-toxic. “LOVE Filana Crayons! We just got our box of block crayons in the mail and had to test them out (because watching and feeling that creamy color glide onto the paper is so satisfying ;-) ). I made the switch to Filana last year after hearing that another brand of beeswax crayons used throughout Waldorf schools contained petroleum wax. I was hoping to find a comparable “cleaner” beeswax crayon, and Filana fit the bill and even surpassed the other brand. "I previously used Stockmar crayons for about four years just as the old standby but decided to do a bit more research on crayons in terms os safety, quality and vibrance of the colors, if there was significant "rolling" from the crayons and an ethical company that I wanted to support. I landed on Filana and when we got the crayons and first used them I couldn't believe how VIBRANT AND BEAUTIFUL the colors were! Seriously, I didn't realize how muddy and dull the Stockmar crayons were until we started coloring with these. My four year old can't get enough of them. She used to watercolor twice a day but now she never asks and doesn't even want to do it when I suggest it! I can't blame her- I mean, I color with her for leisure now lol. Love Filana.
